After leaving UConn in 1981 Doug Mahard lit out on the road and landed in Louisiana for six years. There he reveled in the cajunfunkhillbillyrockjazzgrass music that permeated the cities and backwater bayous.  His experiences fired his imagination and he began writing songs such as “The Sun Always Shines in Louisiana” which his wife thinks is Louisiana’s equivalent to Ray Charles’ “Georgia on My Mind”.  Another song crafted in between bites of gumbo was “Railroad Troubadours”, which spins a yarn so vivid you can smell the alcohol on the hobo’s breath. 
Back in Connecticut since 1987, he continues to turn out an eclectic mix of music making it difficult to pigeonhole his wide ranging talent.  His anthem to creativity “You Are the Amazing One” adds to his list of songs with an uplifting message. He is not beyond political broadsides either; check out La La Land on You Tube. On a recent trip to Florida he was briefly detained and questioned by TSA agents when they found the music for “Fidel Castro’s Favorite Band” in his guitar case. 
A Berklee College of Music songwriter finalist, Doug has released three CD’s to date with the late, great guitarist Joe Beck featured on his self-titled 2012 release second CD. He just finished his third CD Fidel Castro’s Favorite Band in 2016 with Gordon Titcomb producing and playing along with some of the finest musicians out of NYC.
